What is a Labyrinth? A labyrinth is a path arranged in a pattern, in our application, for a spiritual prayer walk or meditation. The eleven circuit labyrinth is replicated from the Chartres Cathedral in France built during the thirteenth century. The labyrinth is an archetype, a divine imprint of wholeness. Walking the labyrinth is an act of pilgrimage, a moving meditation or prayer path. It combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. It becomes a metaphor for the life journey allowing us to deepen our personal experience and conscious contact with God. A Labyrinth is not a maze. A maze is a puzzle to be solved with twists and turns, and dead ends. A labyrinth has only one path , a single course in and out. It is .Over the past ten years labyrinths have undergone a dramatic revival as a meditation, relaxation and spiritual tool. Beginning with churches in the United States, this renewal now encompasses religious communities of all types, hospitals and health care facilities , spas and retreat centers, schools and universities, public parks, memorials, and healing gardens. The labyrinth at Peace in Christ Lutheran Church was funded and constructed by friends and members of our congregation and is dedicated and consecrated to the glory of God as part of our community outreach project. The labyrinth is open to all. |
